Cecil and Billy

The Bull

This was my first solo film at university and was based on a Ted Hughes poem called ‘The Bull Moses’.

I chose to animate with charcoal, which we use a lot for life drawing and I had grown to love the slightly scruffy, tangible feel and the frame to frame inconsistencies of animating with it. It just felt right to animate this majestic yet dirty animal with it.

I absolutely loved making this film (despite it resulting in every inch of my room being covered in charcoal), it taught me so much about the filmmaking process and better prepared me for my next film.

Some Frames from the final film and some development sketches:

Cecil and Billy is about a man who receives a letter from his old imaginary friend, a big blue bear-like creature. The letter requests for him to come and visit him on the strange island where he lives, which he does.

I wanted to explore colour more in this film. I also wanted to improve at character animation and creating backgrounds. The backgrounds were all drawn and coloured on paper (I wanted it to have a illustrated feel rather than being totally digital), then scanned in, arranged in photoshop before any moving elements were done in After Effects. Then the characters were animated on top of these in TVPaint!

Below is some of the development work and assets used to make the scenes!
